Welcome back to Feats N’ Faults where we use our Tiered Point System to rank and record our favorite characters. If you want a rundown on how points are awarded, please check out the About page. Below is our Tier System for reference.
Today we are finally finishing the John Wick franchise. We are taking a look at the Continental. It is a Peacock original that covers Winston Scott’s origin. We have two returning characters, Winston and Charon. There are a ton of original characters too. KD, Miles, Jenkins, Cormac, Lemmy, Lou, Yen, and Frankie are the other characters we will be following. Go ahead and play along and list these characters from least to greatest. Let me know in the comments how you did.
Let’s Get Started!
The Continental:
In last place we have KD. She was set up as a big character in the beginning, but she was mostly used as a device to show the world. She is a tough cop who never really gets a chance to be tough. There is not much to say, but I don’t really have much to say about most of these guys.
In 9th Place, we have Charon! What an upset. When I heard there was a prequel series that followed Charon and Winston, I assumed they would be top-billing. We get to see a fair bit of Charon, but he just does not do much. It is unfortunate that he was in four movies and a TV show about him, and he still only scored a 5. It was maddening watching him do nothing.
In 8th Place, we continue the trend of my favorite characters at the bottom of the list. Out of the original crew we are introduced to, Lemmy is my favorite. There is one guy, whom we will get to, whom I like more. We do not meet him until later in the series. However, Lemmy was not able to do much. He saves Miles at one point, but even in the heist, he is separated from everyone and knocked out for the majority. Tough luck.
In 7th Place, we have Lou. One of Lou's interesting character qualities is that she hates guns. In a series that is all about gunplay, I thought this was an interesting take. She used anything at her disposal as a weapon. I was really excited for some fight scenes where she was using pens or furniture and kicking butt. But guess what everyone, by the end of the series, she is using a gun! She conveniently realizes her dad also used guns, so now she is ok with it. It made the thing that was interesting about her nonexistent. By the end, she is a weapons master, just shooting everyone, too. Booo!
In 6th Place we her brother Miles. He uses guns too. I think he was in love with Lemmy? He used Kung Fu. He scored an 8. Now you know everything about this character.
In 5th Place with the same score we have Cormac. Cormac is a very fun villain. I missed when villains were just evil to be evil. We are conditioned to relate to the villain. To see their point of view. Sometimes it is just fun to hate a guy. Who better to play the part than Mel Gibson? I disagree a lot with him as a human being, but he is a great actor. He nailed this role, and you are glued to him whenever he is on the screen.
We made it! In 4th Place, we have Jenkins. This lovable sniper was the highlight of the show. He was soft-spoken but deadly. There is also a lovely scene where he is sniping people from an apartment building while he is having a nice conversation with the lady he just tied up. He even gets a date out of it! What a guy. He felt the most like a John Wick character.
In 3rd Place is Yen. Yen just kind of shows up a lot in this show. She does not like or trust anyone, but she ends up helping just because her own plans line up with them. She is strangely obsessed with killing herself, but in the end, she overcomes that and explodes someone else with her suicide vest. So, I guess that’s character development?
We have a Tie for 1st and 2nd Place. Who better to tie than the brothers themselves? Frankie and Winston both scored a 14 FN’F score. Frankie was able to do this because he had some of the best action scenes in the series. He was the motivation for the plot, and thus, he acquired more points. That simple. If you can keep the screen time and use it, you can score a decent score.
However, I was a bit disappointed with Winston. He was also in four movies and a show and only got up to 14. His lackadaisical nature really kept him from reaching his potential. If he had helped Wick and Charon defend the hotel, he would have been able to secure some more points. Instead, he just sat on his bum. It is what it is. Winston tied for first, so I guess he and his brother can share the Continental.
Review: 5.5/10
“Just watch John Wick.”
I just could not get into it. It started off strong. The action scene at the beginning of the first episode felt like John Wick. After that success, it just ground to a halt. The action was not interesting, the world was not intriguing, and the characters were dull and one note. While being one note can work for John Wick, these characters need a bit more personality. For a show with only three episodes, it also felt drawn out. This could have easily been one movie. Just too long. They added nothing interesting to the world, but they still treated it like it was fascinating. We have already seen all of this, but they portrayed it as if it were supposed to make you wonder what was happening. There is no mystery! We have already seen 4 movies with this. I am unsure why it got as good of a review as it did. It comes down to this. They took a great action franchise and somehow watered it down into a boring and forgettable show. Nuff’ said.
