Welcome back to Feats N’ Faults, where we use our Tiered Point System to rank and record our favorite characters. If you want a rundown on how points are awarded, please check out the About page. Below is our Tier System for reference.
In today’s feed, we will be ranking all of the iterations of the Master from Doctor Who. We are looking at 8 different versions of the Master. We have the Decayed Master, War Master, Missy, John Simm, Roger Delgado, Sacha Dhawan, The Movie Master, and Anthony Ainley. Who Do you think ranked better? Go ahead and score them from least to greatest, and tell me how many you got right in the comments!
Let’s Get Started!
FN’F: The Masters
Well, my tier list is already wrong. In Last Place, we have the War Master. I thought the Movie Master would be in last place. I guess he did get an entire movie, while this guy only got part of an episode. Even with his short tenure, the War Master could scrounge up 7 FN’F Score at the end of the universe. His score would skyrocket if we ever cover the Big Finish audio dramas. Maybe someday.
In 7th Place, we have the Movie Master. Dang, just one off! I dislike the Movie Master. I think he is the worst out of all of these iterations. I’d take the Cheetah Man Master over this guy. There's not much to say; he got a score of 9 FN’F and ruined my bracket. Oh well, better luck next week.
In 6th Place, we have the Decayed Master. This scheming little skeleton was a nemesis of the 4th Doctor. He has zero Faults but also zero lips. So, hey, what do you expect? He recently ran out of regenerations and was forced to stay in this form while he tried to find a new body. While in this state, he can pull the strings of Gallifrey and frame the Doctor for all sorts of crimes. He eventually regains some more regenerations, which is unfortunate because I like a man behind the curtain. The Master seemed to excel at that.
In 5th Place, we have Roger Delgado’s Master. Boooo, yes, everyone boooo. This man deserves to be at the top of the list! He is the first iteration of the Master we see and is still my favorite. The charisma that he can bring to the role is unmatched. It never feels fake, never feels forced, never trying to be something it is not. It is camp, and I love it. I would have loved to put him higher, but I made the rules, so I got to follow them.
I do not know if you noticed, but we got a huge jump in points for our top four. These versions really duked it out for our top spot. However, not all of them can come first. In 4th Place, we have Missy. Missy is probably my second favorite Master. I think she has a wonderful story arc. It really makes you feel and sympathize with the character for the first time. She also did not get any faults. So not only is she a solid Master, but she also has a solid FN’F Score.
In 3rd Place, we have the most current iteration with Sacha Dhawan’s Master. What a maniacal ball of energy. This Doctor is just chaos incarnate. It was like they took every aspect of the Master and pumped it up to eleven. It does not always work, but when it does, it hits hard. Sacha does an amazing job in the role and came really close to actually beating the Doctor. However, the Doctor always seems to be one step ahead, just like the next Master who was just one point ahead.
In 2nd Place by one point is John Simm’s Master. This Master was probably the closest to winning with his scheme against the 10th Doctor. He took over the planet twice! He also did not score a single fault. That was all it took to score a little higher than Sacha. He is a brilliant Master. I liked his portrayal with the 12th Doctor the best. If you ever get a chance, you should give it a watch.
In 1st Place we have the longest-tenured Master, Anthony Ainley. This legend tortured and bothered so many different Doctors. He was always around and always scheming. He outlived the rest of his versions and stayed alive. That was his biggest feat. Also, a 92 is a very good FN’F Score. Sure, he had his couple faults but look at those results. Anthony Ainley is our Winner.
