Welcome back to Feats N’ Faults where we use our Tiered Point System to rank and record our favorite characters. If you want a rundown on how points are awarded, please check out the About page. Below is our Tier System for reference.
We made it! We are on the final Doctor we will cover in Feats N’ Faults for now. It was a long journey, but we finally made it. We will revisit it once Ncuti finishes his run as the 15th! And from the looks of it, I think his seasons will be great! I might have a couple more surprise Doctor Who entries here and there. One that might be exploring all the iterations of another certain Timelord. But for today, we will be looking at Dan, Yasmin, Graham, Ryan, Karvanista, and the 13th Doctor. I am sure you all know what to do, but if you’re new, go ahead and rank these guys from least to best, and let me know in the comments how you did. All right let’s get into it!
The Companions:
Alright, what is the big idea? Why are my favorite companions always at the bottom of these tier lists? In Last Place, we have my man, Dan Lewis. I can say that Dan is probably down here because he was only in one season of the show and a short season at that. He was great though. He had that everyman vibe that I live in sci-fi shows. It's just a great juxtaposition between him and these alien worlds he finds himself in. Also, his chemistry with Karvanista was perfect. I really wanted them to get a spin-off. I would watch the hell out of that. Even with all that he still only scored a 9 FN’F Score. I can’t even say that he is just low for this feed. He is one of the lowest-scoring companions ever, which is a shame. Please bring Dan back so he can earn some more Feats!
You’ve got to be kidding me! Again! on the same list! I think the universe really is out to get me. The second-best companion of this era is now second to last. In 4th place we have Graham. I think Graham is great. I would also love to see his take on playing the Doctor. I think he would have been a great choice for the role. However, I think Jodie was a great choice for the role too. I just think the writing of this era really deflated the show. Nevertheless, I think Graham should have been able to score a bit higher. Unfortunately, he shared the screen with two other companions during his tenure. So, the points were just harder to come by. He did become King James’ Witch Finder General so that’s a pretty cool feather in his cap. Graham, you’re a legend.
I think the next placement on this list is going to surprise a lot of people. In 3rd place we have Yasmin. Yasmin seemed to be the front-runner for this feed. She was the companion that got the most love during this era. Even if she never got any love from the Doctor. (If you know you know.) Still, I am surprised by her measly 23 FN’F Score. Even though I did not especially like Yaz. I still thought she was a capable companion. To score this low is really surprising. I see you thinking over there. Yeah, that’s right. He scored higher, and yes, he will be in our top spot. Crazy right?
In 2nd Place, we have our favorite dog man Karvanista. Yes, he was only in one short season like Dan. Also, yes, he did score higher than Yasmin. Also yes, I do approve of this placement. Karvanista is a beast. I really like this guy. I also like when the Doctor travels with aliens instead of humans. He has only done it a few times with characters like Romana, Nardole, and K9. This is the first time the actor had to wear an alien costume, and I am here for it! He is just a fun character, and he also saved the planet! Pretty good, Karvanista, pretty good.
What!? Is the Ryan Sinclair in 1st place? I cannot believe it. Is he tied with Karvanista, yes. However, he traveled with the Doctor for more seasons, so I had to give him the win here. I think this is the biggest surprise victory I have seen in my entire time here at Feats N’ Faults. This guy is known for doing nothing, and yet here he is. I never minded Ryan. I just think the writers forgot about him. Since they forgot about him so did I. It turns out you shouldn’t sleep on Ryan because he has done some impressive things. Way to go Ryan. You can’t ride that bike, but boy, can you earn some FN’F Score.
The 13th Doctor:
Enter the 13th Doctor. She has a very respectable score of 274. She is still scoring more than most characters in Feats N’ Faults, but she is right about in the middle regarding iterations of The Doctor. She got herself a universal Feat, which is hard to do, and saved the planet several times. The thing that hurt her was her fault. Unfortunately, she just kept messing up, and a -69 Fault Score is really going to bring your overall score down. She was one of the best-dressed Doctors, but I was hoping for a better showing from her.
Review: 5.5/10
I really wanted to like this era. I did try, I really did. Ultimately, it was the writing that I thought let me down. There are some good episodes in this era but no great ones. When a show is working its hardest to try and deliver just ok programs, it does not deserve a higher score. I like Jodie, and I think her Doctor initially showed some promise. They just never took her anywhere. The awkwardness was done better with 12, the quirky, quick talking was better with 11, and the brooding “woah is me” was better with 10. She just does not really have anything that is her own. In the first episode, I thought she would be our gadget Doctor. A Doctor who is always tinkering and building fun new toys and gadgets. Pulling out exactly what they need from her pockets that are bigger on the inside. Pulling down those fun round goggles and just going to work. That is the Doctor I wish I saw. Instead, she was just an amalgamation of what we have seen previously. But worse. The writers also forgot about her companions. Ryan is a great example. They gave the character dyspraxia, but they never really used that condition to create drama or to show him overcoming something. What a missed opportunity to make him interesting. They also established that he ran a small YouTube blog. Yet they never did anything with that either. What a waste! Every character is like that. It is just shallow and never really explores much in depth. Yasmin has a decent arch. You really felt her desperation in trying to know the Doctor because we, as an audience, had the same feelings. That was good for Yasmin’s story but bad for us as an audience who wanted to get to know these characters and see them develop. It is not bad, but it is not good. So, a 5.5 is what we are left with. If you are interested in this era, I would check out these three episodes:
Revolution of the Daleks
The Tsuranga Conundrum
The Witchfinders
Thanks for taking this Journey through Doctor Who with me. We still have a couple more feeds focused on it, but it will no longer be our main focus. Now we are moving on to the MCU and Star Wars. We will have some surprises in between too. Also, do not forget that I have a special FN’F that will come out the second we reach 100 subscribers. Trust me it is a fun one! Please do not forget to subscribe and share with a friend! Let’s see how quickly we can get there!
Until Next Time!
