Welcome everyone to the first Top Team! These are the types of feeds I have been dreaming of making. Now that we have all this data, we can use it to do some pretty neat things! Now that we have gone through all of Doctor Who's Doctors and Companions, we can determine the best Tardis Team. Statistically anyway. They do have a time machine after all. If we were to give the best doctor a heads-up on who his best companions are, then he could go pick them up and do wonders throughout the cosmos. So, let’s grab our notes and start to break down what makes up a Tardis Team.
. Let’s Get Started!
Tardis Team Make-Up:
The Tardis may be an infinitely large machine capable of holding thousands of crewmates, yet a Tardis Team is usually quite small. People might come and go, but there is always one constant: The Doctor. The Doctor is never usually alone. He often travels with companions who help him in his struggles and also keep him grounded. This group is normally a small one. Ranging between 1-4 companions at a time. They do not play any particular role on the ship, and each companion is unique in what they bring to the table.
Role 1: A Doctor
Every show and series has a Doctor who takes up the leadership role of the Tardis. He is not always the only pilot or the smartest when it comes to tech. The only constant thing is that there is a version of the Doctor leading the companions. There are not very many parameters to this role. We just need to pick the Doctor who has achieved the highest FN’F Score. Luckily, I have already broken down all the Doctors and their scores. The winner for this role is obvious. Once we have decided on our leader we can start to break down and look at the companions.
4th Doctor: Tom Baker (1974-1981) 172 Episodes, FN’F Score 683
The 4th Doctor is a joy. No wonder he is a fan favorite. He just exudes charisma. Where he really shined was in the number of episodes he was in. Just look at that. He was in 172 episodes of Doctor Who. He had plenty of time to earn points, and boy, did he. The highest-scoring Doctor, saving the entire universe on multiple occasions. He even had an insane number of faults, but nothing could keep this guy down. This guy waged a war against vampires; just saying. He is a badass in a scarf and could sarcastically jab circles around anyone. The perfect fit for our Top Tardis Team.
Role 2-3: The Companions
The companions in the series range drastically in experience and expertise. For example, most teams might always have a tracker, weapon specialist, or hacker. Always having a character to fulfill a certain role. With Doctor Who, the Doctor is the expert in everything, so the companion roles are often open to let the writers do whatever they want. You could add a highlander with no knowledge of futuristic tech, a high school teacher from the 60s, or even another timelord from the future. So, just like with the Doctor role, there are no limitations or niches for the companions. This makes it even simpler for us. We just need to find the best companions. It is fairly simple, but first, we must look at how many companions the Doctor usually travels with. It ranges depending on the series, but you never see it balloon past three. I think three companions is a good number because the Doctor falls back on this time and time again. The 1st, 4th, 5th, and 13th Doctor all regularly traveled with three companions. I think this sets enough precedent to determine that the best Tardis Team would contain three magnificent companions. If we look at our data, the best companions suited for this team become obvious. Three super capable and strong women from the current and classic era.
Jo Grant: Katy Manning (1971-2023) 80 Episodes, FN’F Score 143
Jo is a great companion that got a rocky start for me. When we are first introduced to the 3rd Doctor he worked with Liz Shaw. She was an unshaken professional of a woman. Calm and collected, she seemed to be the Doctors’ equal. Then Jo came onto the scene. She was bumbling and clumsy and always getting in the Doctor’s way. It was a drastic departure from what we were used to. Like most characters, however, she began to grow. She changed and quickly turned into the very impressive companion we see today. She saved the universe and the planet. She earned her spot here, and her quick wit would help keep our rambunctious Doctor in line. Plus I am sure her clumsiness would accidently save the team too. It normally did.
Clara Oswald: Jenna Coleman (2012-2017) 38 Episodes, FN’F Score 212
If you have been following this feed, you know that Clara and I have a rough relationship. She has never been my favorite. To be honest, she is second to last in my personal rankings. I really can not stand this entitled and manipulative companion. Yet, her numbers do not lie. She had a pretty impressive run in the series. Being able to handle any problem to the point she got a tad too cocky about it. Turning herself into a psuedo Doctor and trying to leave the companion role behind. I am surprised she never learned how to fly the Tardis on her own. If Yaz can do it, I am sure she could have figured it out. But she had the Doctor tied so tightly around her finger that she never felt the need to. Even though I have my opinions about Clara, I have to admit that she does deserve to be here.
Donna Noble: Catherine Tate (2006-2023) 19 Episodes, FN’F Score 450
Donna is my favorite companion. Now I know how this looks, and I promise you I do not play favorites when it comes to Feats N’ Faults. She was just that impressive. In only 19 episodes, she was able to score more than some iterations of the Doctor. Strong, independent, and giving just as much sass back, Donna is a force to be reckoned with. Don’t get her anywhere near a meta-crisis because if the Doctor Donna ever comes out to play, you are done for. All the knowledge of the Doctor is wrapped up in Donna’s personality. She might not be able to hold that form for too long, but she doesn’t need that much time to get the better of you. A perfect companion to round out our group. Give it up to these three wonderful ladies. They really are the best of the best.
Top Tardis Team: FN’F Score 1,488
There they are. The Top Tardis Team! What a combo. What a clash of personalities, though! It would take them all a minute to adjust to their traveling partners. I do not think Clara and Donna would be friends, but when push came to shove, I am sure they would make a spectacular team. Dealing with any threat that came their way. These guys have so much experience dealing with Daleks, Cybermen, vampires, and any creature living in the Whoniverse. If you distilled Doctor Who down to one team, this is what you would get. I wonder if any other Top Teams like the Avengers, Star Wars, or One Piece Crew can compete with their combined score of 1,488. It is going to be hard to beat. Stay tuned to see who can do it first.
