First Thoughts:
I didn’t expect much going into this. I saw half a trailer and almost missed this film entirely. I just wanted something to do on a dreary Saturday morning. I wanted to see Sasquatch Sunset, but it was already out of my theater. Then I remembered that Henry Cavill was in this. I love Henry Cavill. He is almost as big of a nerd as me. He even beats me in some areas, so I was all in to support his project. I am glad I did.
Strangely Nostalgic:
I came out of the theater feeling a bit nostalgic. Every movie is trying to be Marvel these days. It is all connected. We are setting up a sequel. We are building a universe. I love those things, but I realized those formulas are starting to get a bit taxing. If they are getting to me, I know they have to be getting to the general audience. It just does not feel sincere anymore. When the MCU started it was an experiment and a labor of love between Feige and Favreau. Now it all feels like cash grabs and studio notes. This film has none of that. Yes, I know this is a historical piece that is based on a true story so there is no real way to make a sequel. Still, it is refreshing. It reminds me of when most movies were these one-off action films or comedies. We don’t even get comedies anymore. Why is that?
The Action:
Pure fun. Simple enough. There are a couple of excellent fight scenes. The first is in the opening moments of the film on a sailboat and the other is when they… are also… on a boat. Hmm… A lot of boat fighting now that I think about it.
